The Colchagua Valley is arguably Chile’s most outstanding wine area, particularly for Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Carménère.
The latter is a variety of wine grape that formed part of original six red grapes of Bordeaux, wiped out by the devastating phylloxera virus in Europe in the 19th Century, and presumed extinct for over a century before being rediscovered in Colchagua in 1994. It is now the most emblematic of Chilean varietals, flourishing in the ideal climate and terroir of Colchagua and other valleys.
Colchagua is also home to remarkable Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz, produced in over 100 wineries from independent, single-label to some of the biggest players in the industry.
The Valley can be experienced aboard the historic "Tren del Vino", a steam train offering wine tasting and folklore entertainment while passing by the valleys most famous vineyards. Visits to the wineries are superb, with Montes, Casa Lapostolle, and Neyén perhaps the pick of the bunch. Some vineyards can be enjoyed on horseback, some offer vertical tastings, and you can even blend your own wine while touring Viña MontGras. This is paradise for wine lovers.
Santa Cruz offers far more than wine however. It is also the seat of Chile’s rural culture and traditions, which gives the place a real identity. Among its many highlights, perhaps the most famous is the Museo Colchagua. Exhibits here cover Chilean history from pre-Colonial days to the present day, with everything from amber and nautical maps, to weaponry, tools and machinery. |
There are plenty of great restaurants where you can enjoy traditional Chilean dishes in the most charming settings.

For real foodies, a visit to Pilar Rodriguez’s Food & Wine Studio at Viu Manent is a must. Diners work with the chef to prepare a six-course wine-and-food lunch that incorporates such native Chilean ingredients as merkén (a spice), quinoa and maracuyá (passion fruit). For the more adventurous, Santa Cruz is the perfect base for exploring the valley on foot, by bike, or on horseback.
Santa Cruz is not just a gateway to some of the world’s best wines, but also the traditions, nature, and cuisine of this long and thin country.
